Ancient Roman Fortress Restored in Bulgaria's Montana

Sofia News Agency

The ancient Roman fortress Kaleto near Bulgaria's town of Montana has been restored and is opening for visitors.

The project cost BGN 1.3 M and was co-financed by EU funds and Montana municipality.

The restoration of the Montana fortress is among the several similar projects, whose aim is to attract tourists in smaller municipalities. Probably the most well-known so far is the Tsari Mali Grad fortress in Belchin – a village near Sofia, which opened for visitors last summer.

On June 8, the day of Montana, in the fortress will be held a Roman festival, which will feature a Roman town with soldiers, slaves, traders and free citizens.

Montana is the only Bulgarian town, which uses its old Roman name.
